Question by Brittany T: I’ve just started cheerleading and the coach made me a flyer. I’m horrible at it. How to improve and fast!!!
I’ve just been cheerleading for the past 4-5 weeks and the coach made me a flyer today. But I couldn’t stand up straight for anything. I’m a decent base adn front spot but I really do want to improve on being a flyer. I think I’m really afraid of falling and them not catching me. Any tips, and should I be mad at myself over not being able to get it right today? Or does practice really make perfect????

I don’t know anything about cheerleading, but I’m sure your coach does. And if s/he made you a flyer, he’s got to be aware of your strengths and limitations. He knows exactly how well you do at the flyer stuff. He will help you improve. Also, I’d ask other teammates. They’ve probably been through this before and will be able to offer suggestions.

i recommend getting 2 know the people spottin/ basing you… being scared of them not catching you will go away as soon as you learn to trust them… start with easy stunts [preps] and just work your way up…. dont get mad at yourself that you couldnt do it… you just need 2 learn 2 trust yourself and the others….

Don’t panic. And never be afraid that they won’t catch you, because that will give you more of a reason to spazz as your falling. Try the trust game. Where you fall back and they catch you. Remember to stay tight. And if you don’t feel comfortable, ask your coach if you could maybe have a few more spots standing around just in case. You can do it!! The first time I flew I fell and they caught me. You just have to have faith in your bases. Good luck!!!

I know what you feel like because i was just put as flyer too. Don’t let the fear of falling get to you or else you will get scared nervous and you will fall any way. Be very tight and not kicking or screaming when about to be caught it is easier for them to caught a calm tight person than someone that is all over the place and from past experiences i can tell you that if thay don’t catch you I’t doesn’t really hurt.

If you are a flyer you need to trust your bases and spots. maybe you guys could do some teambuilding exercises together. like falling back and them catching you. also, trusting your bases will come with time. If you are confident in yourself and your bases, you’ll be fine
