I’ve just started cheerleading and the coach made me a flyer. I’m horrible at it. How to improve and fast!!!

Question by Brittany T: I’ve just started cheerleading and the coach made me a flyer. I’m horrible at it. How to improve and fast!!!
I’ve just been cheerleading for the past 4-5 weeks and the coach made me a flyer today. But I couldn’t stand up straight for anything. I’m a decent base adn front spot but I really do want to improve on being a flyer. I think I’m really afraid of falling and them not catching me. Any tips, and should I be mad at myself over not being able to get it right today? Or does practice really make perfect????

I don’t know anything about cheerleading, but I’m sure your coach does. And if s/he made you a flyer, he’s got to be aware of your strengths and limitations. He knows exactly how well you do at the flyer stuff. He will help you improve. Also, I’d ask other teammates. They’ve probably been through this before and will be able to offer suggestions.

If she wants to do cheer extreme which is a lot of competion cheerleading, then there should be a local team, like in the closest big city to you. Honestly, i dont know how to find that.
I would look online. Or if you know parents of kids who do cheerleading, ask them.

Also, sign her up for a camp this summer, you learn the basics, and they are SUPER fun!!

The only person who can answer your questions is the cheer coach. Usually there is a first time meeting where you will get the info about costs and uniforms, but I wouldn’t wait until then to find out because you might need to make your decision to cheer based on that info.

So find out if there are any reasons you can’t cheer, like it costs too much, or they require tumbling skills that you don’t have. While you are waiting to get the answers to those questions, you should be training for tryouts. If it is a very athletic and competitive squad you are trying out for you will want to sign up for a tumbling class; and nearly every day do tumbling drills, stretching and conditioning for strength, endurance and flexibility; and work on motions and jumps as well. You can see tips, pictures, and videos of how to learn these skills here: http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/basics.htm

Good luck. :^)
