What can I do to improve my cheerleading?

Question by ETeri: What can I do to improve my cheerleading?
I am looking ot try out for cheeleading at my highscool. I have a ton of school spirit and am very friendly. I ‘m pretty good when it comes to gymnastics too. I just need to know what else I need to work on. Are there any exercises or stretches I can do to improve? Jumps, stretches, dance technique, cheer? I want to know everything possible! Please and thank you!

1- go to sporting events and watch the cheer squad in action.
2-stretching your inner legs is a must. You have to be able to do the splits (both ways)
3-see if there is a cheer coach available to help you.
4- ask a current cheerleader in your school for help and what your school is looking for. some girls are bitchy but there is always at least one who will help you.
5-practice cheers/make up your own. start simple. this is easier when you watch the current team in action.

Working on tight movement and taking gymnastic at the same time will help a lot and learn how to do a backhand spring. Do stretches everyday to help flexibility and do another sport while your waiting to try out for it.

Hello! It’s great that you are so enthusiastic about cheerleading! I really hope I can help you!

First off, can you do splits and toe touches? If you can’t, please read on. These are some very good stretches for obtaining these skills:

Make sure you do straddle stretches. Sit with your legs spread as far as they can before it hurts. Reach to one of your feet until it hurts a little, count to ten, and then go to the middle and do the same thing, and the other foot as well.

Now, the next good stretch is sitting on your butt, feet straight out in front of you. Reach for your toes and count to ten again. Do this twice, or three times if you can. Also, if you can have someone gently push on you, it would really get you to the splits quicker.

Next, the butterfly stretch! Sit on your but with the souls of your feet touching each other. It’s kinda like a weird Indian style position. Then, try to touch your head to your feet. Go as far as you can go and hold it for ten seconds. Do this three times, coming up for a breather between each one. Then, press on your knees; try to make them touch the ground. Hold it for ten seconds, for three times.

Practicing your splits every day after these stretches will help you immensely. Also practicing things like toe touches on a trampoline will help as well.

ALWAYS PRACTICE YOUR SPLITS AT LEAST TWICE A DAY! Make sure you don’t push yourself to where it’s going to damage your legs. Be gentle, but expect a little bit of pain.

As far as toe touches go, my best friend, who is a varsity cheerleader, gave me some tips for getting mine higher. For practicing your toe touches, you should first clasp your hands high above your head, your fingers interlocked (your arms will make a triangle shape) and then swiftly bring them down and do your jump. Using your arms this way helps you get off the ground and get more air. It looks horrible to do this for performing- it is just a way to practice them. You should also hang onto a chair or something very sturdy and do 50-100 toe touches every day. This will help you get your toe touch down a lot faster than just doing a few. Don’t do them all at one time, but stretch very well before doing a set. Try to start out at 10 each set, and slowly work your way up to where you are doing 100 each day.

American Cheerleader magazine always has articles on how to get more flexible and good ways to improve your jumps, so I would check out their next issue as well.

You really should sign up for classes for cheerleading. These classes teach things that gymnastics does not. You really should check out this website: http://www.usgyms.net/
Go to Gym Directory and click on your state. Look for cheer gyms in your area and try to sign up for classes. You want to be ahead in your skills compared to every other girl and guy if you want to make the team!

    Also, check out http://www.americancheerleader.com/
They have tons of tips for tryouts and ways to become a better cheerleader.

Always smile, keep your movements very sharp, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Good luck!

I hope I helped! Good luck!

the best thing to know is your jumps like toe touches pikes hurkeys and even more but the better your jumps are the more of a chance you have.

As far as requirements go, if it is a very athletic and competitive squad you will want to start exercising for strength, flexibility, and endurance. You will also want to keep working on those tumbling skills, and start working on motions and jumps as well. You can find examples of those here: http://geocities.com/aescougarcheer/basics.htm
