Q&A: Do you think I could be a cheerleader?

Question by Emily H: Do you think I could be a cheerleader?
Im 5’0 and about 102 pounds. Im flexible but I cant do stuff like competitive cheerleading things. I can do a perfect cartwheel that is straight and a round-off. Im afraid that I wont make the team since Im not that flexible. Do you think I weigh to much to be a cheerleader?
And do you know anything I can do to improve my flexibility and do the splits?

Yeah, I think you would make a great cheerleader!!!!!!! It’s awesome how your going for the team. I think you should try out!!!!! To be a cheerleader, you have to want to be a cheerleader. You have to eat right and exercise, have fun, and just believe in yourself. If you don’t make the team. It’s okay. Never give up on being a cheerleader. =)

You are not too heavy to be a cheerleader at all! I lift girls that are 120 pounds! And if the bases can’t lift you, you be a base, it’s fine. The way to get a split is this stretch, but you must practice it a lot.
Kneel on the ground so one knee is on the ground and the other is at a right angle in front of you. Keep moving your foot and leaning your body in the direction of your foot. You should feel the stretch on the back of your other leg. Then, keep your knee on the ground, but pur your leg straight out and lean your head to your knee. It really helps!
Even though you don’t have the gymnastic abilities like back tucks and handsprings, don’t worry, I made my team with just a backwalkover and round off. Good luck!

I am 5 feet ish and weigh about 115 pounds. I am a cheerleader at my school, but I don’t do competitions. I am able to do pyramids and I do a tom of sideline cheers at the games. I am not flexible at all and I am a really good back spotter, too. I can’t do a cartwheel at all and I made it. The only thing I can suggest is take a tumbling class or a gymnastics class at a park district. It will help somewhat cuase’ it did help me. I

to improve flexibility, do a lot of yoga.
