Can I be a cheerleader and a dancer if I have surgery on my back for scoliosis?

Question by Sapphire Jewel: Can I be a cheerleader and a dancer if I have surgery on my back for scoliosis?
I am a cheerleader at my high school and am a dancer, but I have scoliosis, and I might have to have surgery ='(
If I do, will I ever be able to dance again?? I tumble and do fast paced hard core (LOL) dance moves…

Only your doctor would know that for sure.

You will be able to eventually yes, but the recovery time after surgery is pretty long 1-2 years until you can play sports.

    Good luck! 🙂

It depends on how big your curve is and how long the fusion would be. With a high impact sport like cheerleading I would say you might not be able to tumble again. With dance a lot of things require back flexibility so I would say no. Im a high school dancer with scoliosis at 60 degrees and I chose not to get the surgery. I go to a chiropractor through the Clear Institute. The program uses a chair with straps to pull opposite the curve and stretch out connective tissue. It follows with neuromuscular retraining. The weights are on the opposite side of your curve and help teach your body to subconsiously hold your spine in the right spot. I had a 75 degree curve and my curve went down 15 points in two weeks. Surgery is not the only option!!!
