    A dancer, dances. A cheerleader can dance but she basically does skits and cheers that are choreographed. They are similar though.

    A dancer is expected to learn routines quickly and without question and to have great energy and endurance to perform for a couple of hours of a musical or several shows in an evening in a Las Vegas type show.
    A cheerleader is expected to show great athleticism and enthusiasm for short periods of time and to work with team mates for complex maneuvers.
    I think a better comparison/contrast might be between cheerleaders and gymnasts. In some colleges the male members of the cheer squad are also leading gymnasts for the school.
