I don’t know any cheerleaders that can do flips.
You’ve watched it “Bring It On” too many times.

Ok, First of all, you don’t need to be able to do flips or moves. From what i see at school, the cheer leaders do pyramids, jumps, cheers all that stuff. If you can’t do flips, be support and hold up pyramids, people, etc. I’m sorry if i can’t help out more. I’m a guy (not to be stereotypical).

Yes you can. The high school level tends to be pretty tame with the physical acrobatics. Being able to do flips might help if her team competed nationally, but her inability to do flips shouldn’t keep her from trying out and likely wouldn’t keep her from making her high school team.

Flips are actually an integral part of the routines for many older cheerleaders (high school and college) but not for the younger ones (junior high and younger).

I grew up in sports and band and have seen various cheerleader squads for many years. Most do flips and tosses.

What you should ask yourself is: “Does the squad you might want to join require flips and tosses?”
If yes, you should be able to learn how to do them from a cheerleader friend. I’d recommend learning from a gymnastics’ coach. The coach will have a ton of pedagogy on teaching beginners as well as having the necessary safety equipment.
Good luck with this – AND – be careful.

Flips aren’t always a requirement. Encourage her to try out if Cheering is really what she wants to do. most high school cheer squads have coaches so if she has questions in advance she could always schedule an appointment and speak with the cheer coach prior to trying out, that way she would know everything that will be expected which will help her make a more informed decision regarding cheerleader activities.
