175 pounds is a lot for your height, but if you really want to be a cheerleader, you should try out. Except, if your school is being all ‘only slim popular girls can become cheerleaders’, don’t bother: you’ll only have chance if you’re already friends with the current cheerleaders…

I’m gonna sound like a nagger now, but try to lose some weight. Obesity comes with all sorts of heightened health risks, such as diabetes, heart failure, and so on.

It’s not really a matter of whether they’d “accept” you. What matters is how well you can do the skills required in cheerleading. Most schools use a standard judging form to grade you on a variety of different skills. They usually look something like this:

    Entrance/Smile – 5 pts
Crowd appeal (neat, pleasant appearance) – 5 pts
Spirit (being peppy) – 5 pts
Voice Projection (being loud but not screechy) – 5 pts
Motions (being sharp) – 10 pts
Memory/Recall (ability to learn the cheer) – 10 pts
Jumps (height and technique) – 15 pts
Tumbling (difficulty and form) – 10-15 pts
    Dance ability – 5-10 pts
    Grades – 10 pts
    Citizenship – 20 pts
Total Possible points – 100 pts

Note the “Crowd Appeal” category. That’s a nice way of saying “What she looks like.” Judges (and fans) want to see someone who’s pleasing to look at – not necesarily gorgeous or stick-thin, but well groomed, wholesome and fit looking. So yes, if you look a bit unfit, you could possibly lose a few points in the Crowd Appeal category. BUT – that’s only worth 5 points, out of a possible 100. If you can do all the actual skills as well as everyone else, you have just as much chance of making the team as the smaller girls.

Schools these days are very, very careful to make sure their cheer tryouts are absolutely fair to everyone. Not only out of goodwill, but to protect themselves from possible lawsuits. Many schools have been sued by angry parents who claim, “You discriminated against my daughter because she’s [whatever]” So they make sure their tryouts are based on ability, not looks or popularity. Also, schools don’t want to encourage unhealthy dieting or eating disorders by implying that cheerleaders must be a certain weight or body type. The days of cheerleaders being chosen on looks or popularity alone are long gone! If you have the skills to make the squad, then you should be just fine!
