what should i do to be better at cheerleading?

Question by Annoymous: what should i do to be better at cheerleading?
Cheerleading tryouts at my school are in April and i don’t realy think i’m that good like i should. I asked the cheerleading captain from another school to help but she’s so mean and stuck up all she and friends do is laugh at me when i do something wrong . I want to make the tryouts but i’m realy shy. I need to work on my voice, jumps, motions, and about everything else. Please give me tips on what i should do!

Dont be shy! You wont look stupid because everyone else is doing the same thing. Just try your best and practice alot. Do you take gymnastics? That might help if you know how to do back handsprings, or even just cartwheels, roundoffs and splits. Good luck!!

That’s great to hear you are thinking about cheerleading!

The best thing you can do right now is find a local gymnastics place, they will know what you need to learn.
    Know jumps like toe-touches, herkies…
Start yelling when you are talking, be LOUD. Then it won’t be so weird when you have to shout out cheers.
Lift some 2-3 pound weights every other day for 10 reps each to get some muscle in your arms, need to do your stunts and lifts.
Stretch everyday, splits and toe touches most importantly.
At the tryouts, be confident, on time, and very enthusiastic!
If you make a mistake, act like nothing happened, move on, and don’t make a big scene. Never be afraid to ask how to do something. Ask previous cheerleaders or ones on the squad right now (or coach or someone you know) on what to expect.
Be loud, SMILE, and keep your hair tied back in a ponytail. Don’t chew gum and don’t wear any makeup.

Good luck in making the squad!!!

    Ok… this might help.
Voice: Standing up straight should make you sound alot better. My coach taught me a method: breath in, and as you are breathing out yell in a peppy and enthusiastic voice. Don’t speak too fast, or too serious, you want to brighten up the faces of your judges.
Jumps: Jumps are best practiced on a spring floor or trampoline. If there is a specific jump you need work on, research tips online or in books. Don’t forget to smile when you jump, I know it’s hard, but it is great when the judges look at it.
Motions: Move your body swiftly to the motion you are performing, and then lock it! Keep it stiff and hold tight.
Tumbling: This sounds silly, but you can practice your tumbling skills and have fun at the same time. I sometimes practice while watching TV… listening to music… yeah. Get a friend to spot you in this kind of stuff.
Fitness: Work on sit ups, push ups, and other exercises for about 1-2 mins at a time. Lift 2-3 pound weights a few times a day, eat healthy.
How to deal w/ mean cheerleaders: Just ignore them, get some REAL help.

Good luck at tryouts! You’ll do great!

well first of all, the cheerleading captain that you talked to should not be like that… for someone to be like that especially a captain is wrong.. anyway… here are some tips:

Voice: you want to yell the words and be LOUD; do not sing the words

Jumps: you should be able to do a toetouch, pike, right and left hurder/herkie; you want your toetouch to look like a straddle (what you do on the ground)

Motions: you should learn a dance at tryout but be familiar with names of arms like touchdown, low V, high V, big and little T; also names given to hand placement like blades, what we call little cinnamon rolls and big cinnamon rolls; also after you learn the motions be very very sharp and precise with them

    Other Info: know how to do a cartwheel, roundoff, backbend, maybe a backhandspring;

check with the cheerleading team about what you need to know
