Could I make it in High school cheerleading?

Question by The Sun Still Sleeps…: Could I make it in High school cheerleading?
I am going into high school, and was wondering what I would need to do to be on the cheerleading team. I know I have to try out, but like what else do I have to do? I dance, and someone asked if I was going to do cheerleading, but I hadn’t exactly thought about it, but I was just wondering! Thx.
I just got braces today also. Would this count against me at all? How good would I have to be at gymnastics? Thx. again!

you should ask current cheerleaders what you have to be able to do to make it!! i am a cheerleader and the qualifications differ from school to school…good luck!!

You can do anything you put your mind to, you may not make varsity right away but if you work at it you’ll dominate.

I did the same with football in highschool I played on the Freshman team my first year made varsity the next three. Go get em!

You should probaly be flexible and be able to do hand springs! It’s okay if you can’t still go try out trust I couldnt and still made it so just try this out!

Usually, you need background in gymnastics. In our county, you must have a free-standing back handspring in order to make all varsity and most junior varsity squads. Dance background also helps. If you don’t have the tumbling, perhaps your school has a dance team? They are becoming more and more prevalent as “professional cheerleading squads” (such as the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders) are really dance teams.

You have to be really flexible and have good balance,.. which you probably do if you’re a dancer, and if you want to make the squad, you should probably be able to do a cartwheel or backflip,.. and be prepared to be out to all games, no matter how cold or nasty the weather is.

In order to be a cheerleader it is a requirement to know how to do a split. You have to either be able to do a jumping split, roundoff, cartwheel, or back flip but not nessesarily all three. Again split is a requirement. Good hygiene is a plus. It also helps if you have straight teeth.Their not gonna tell you that but nice smiles play a major roll. Do you want someone with a jacked up mouth leading you in cheer? You dont have to be a certain size to be a cheerleader of course size will play a part in whether your on top of the pyramid or on bottom getting stepped on. Have all these skills, good hygiene, peppy attitude, go in their with a smile and confidence and youll do fine.

DON’T FORGET ALL THE GYMNASTICS INVOLVED!!! Cheerleading is more then a bunch of all-too-peppy girls doing dances and “easy” tricks and flips.

definitely try your best! Dance does help! and stiff arms like when you do high v (arms raised above your head in a v shape) very stiff arms. good luck!
