The gym hall has turquoise green walls, a bright yellow court, and a large blue gymnastics mat the colour of the sky laid down. The kids begin their cheerleading stunts and in another era this would be like a propaganda routine for a state ceremony. Then the house music begins, girls lifted up and down every 30 seconds like frantic periscopes during the hyperactive medley. Pony tails flap back and forth, 303 acid lines squeal against the thud of kick drums reverberating with cheery malice.
Suburb of Quebec City – L’Ancienne-Lorette, visited cheerleading comp in sports hall. High school musical in French, cheers reverberated, routines complimented by hooting, vacuous dance music: ghetto/trance/Disney/electro marched maneuvers, girls smoothly lifted, human towers of a fortress of daft choreography, skirts whipping, legs shapely sharp – camera changed that, foundations collapse, they execute self-programs, unification disbanded; crowd fell silent with recording devices held aloft.
