How 2 get ready 2 start cheerleading?

Question by Reanna: How 2 get ready 2 start cheerleading?
I was planning on doing cheerleading in the next few years. I never have be4 and don’t know how 2 start practicing for it. I’m not very flexible or anything. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or knew a site telling things I can do 2 start.

Stretching is the most important thing you can do. Stretch everyday twice a day. Americancheerleader.com is a great website as is varsity.com. Watch cheerleading videos on Youtube. The videos from the 2009 worlds as excellent, but you will not be starting out at a team that would be at Worlds. Take some tumbling/gymnatics classes at a local gym. Be confident. Cheerleading is all about confidence.

stretch and do strength exercises daily. push ups, sit ups, leg lifts and holding gym strength positions such as dish will really help with strength (do legs and core mostly).
for flexibility stretch out everything everyday. do lunges, straddle and angel sit for splits and do normal things like touching your toes and holding it and stretch out your muscles before and after doing strength.

-definitely stretch every day, if you can have a split or a heel stretch or something, you will probably get extra points.

-if you dont know the basic cheer jumps (toe touch, herkie, front herdler, pike) you should youtube them and practice them often. it’s hard but worth it. and also, if you have a trampoline that is really good for practicing jumps on 🙂

-go into try outs always looking neat and clean. have hair out of your face, and wear gym attire so you are ready to go.

-have a smile on your face, it gives a great impression. and if you mess up during your tryout, keep going and try to keep smiling too, the judges want to see how you handle pressure.

-if you learn a cheer, make sure to annunciate the words and speak really loudly. when you are on a football field yelling cheers, you need to have a nice, deep voice and that is one thing they will look for.

-maybe stop by an open gym a couple times a week (find a gymnastics place nearby). if you have no gymnastics skills, many of the coaches will still be able to help you with cheer related things, and you can still get a start on tumbling and perfecting simpler skills like round offs.

good luck! (and i reccomend varsity.com, they have articles to help you perfect your jumps and improve!)
