I don’t see any difference. Maybe poms might be considered the dance team in some schools.

  1. Carebear

Poms is the dance team and focus on mainly dancing
    Cheerleading does dance,tumble, and stunts

Poms requires some technical dance skills. Cheer usually requires tumbling skills, plus stunting. You do jumps in both, but they aren’t exactly the same. Both require nice strong, clean motions.

Find out what skills and background are needed. If one has requirements that you can’t meet right now (like double pirouettes and fouettes or handsprings) then try out for the other one if you can meet its requirements instead.

Here is a website all about cheerleading: http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/basics.htm

Here is one about poms: http://getpoms.com/pompolishing.htm

Good luck! I hope you find the right activity for you.
