Q&A: What are the Requirements for cheerleading?

Question by Amanda: What are the Requirements for cheerleading?
OK, so i was recently sprung with the passion to be a cheerleader, but have NO experience. What are the requirements? i want to try out for my high school squad next year (i’ll be a freshman) and was wondering if that was enough time to prepare myself.

You absolutely have enough time! Requirements vary from team to team, but here are some general guidelines:

Sign up for a tumbling class asap! Tumbling is becoming a major requirement for many teams, so taking classes in the meantimes is a huge bonus!

If flipping and tumbling isn’t your thing, not to worry. I had no tumbling expereince when I started. The MOST important things are dedication and willingness to learn! Sounds lame, but coaches are looking for athletes who will try multiple positions (Base, Fly, Etc.) and who will go forth with a great attitude! They don’t want athletes who aren’t willing to learn, especially because cheerleaders need to be just that – leaders!

Make sure you are staying in shape, eating well, and like I said tumbling is a huge bonus. That and a dose of confidence and you’ll be good to go!

Well at the high school i know, these are most of the requierments ….

    Toe Touch
    Right or Left Herkie
    Front Herdler
    Back Tuck
    Front Tuck
    Backhandspring
    Roundoff
    Pike Jump
    Standing Tuck

If you don’t know what they are you can look them up on google or youtube If you don’t get it, don’t give up. You will sooner or later. 😀

You can also take tumbling or gymnastic classes, but i would prefer tumbling for cheer.

    I hope this helps (:

Yes! u have more than enough time to prepare. Ask the coach what you need to know..go down to the school and talk with her or her. Ask some of the cheerleaders at the games and see what they say. Practice doing some cheers and get use to some motions. You can find some really good info online too. Go to as well cheer events as you can and see what’s out there. There is so much you can do. Eat healthy and PLZ exercise. I say this becasue if you do’t it will be hard for you to make this a habit when you join the team. Believe in yourself and remeber to have fun. Learn atleast a cartwheel and a round off but believe it of not you can still make the team with out that! good luck. If you have any questions just e-mail me.
