yeah juss go ask, espically since you’re doing it for free, they’d be stupid to say no.

I asked my Principal awhile back about getting a lacrosse team, and the only issues he had with it were…

    -Providing Equipment.
    – Hiring a Coach.
    – If enough people would play it.
    – Practice times or field to practice on.

Sounds like the best plan would be to talk to the Principal, and if they are on board make sure you ask about uniforms, and where you can practice seeing as you could coach it, and I’m assuming you have enough people.

If the Principal says you can’t coach being a student yourself talk to one of your squad members to find out if a parent of their or even ask a parent of your to say they are coaching it. Now this isn’t to say they would be coaching, but willing to talk to the Principal to get money issues down. So you would still be taking the reins, but if some issues pop up of money/timing the parent “coach” could deal with it!

    So main points are…

    Uniforms.
Whether or not the Principal will allow a student to coach.
And having a place to practice.

Are you over 18? Are you planning to double up between being on your Varsity squad and coaching elsewhere? Is that a realistic plan in terms of time management?

Do they have a team? Do they already have a coach?

If the answers to those last two questions are no then you need to find out from the principal if there is any interest in cheering in the school and if there are any complications to starting a team such as a lack of practice space, mats, and liability insurance.

If the principal and the school board clear the way through all of those obstacles make sure that _you_ are covered under that liability policy and have gotten your certification in stunting.

Finally, I would like to point out that coaching and managing a team full of kids is hard enough without being about the same age as they are. They really try to make you into their buddy instead of their boss, and that makes it incredibly difficult to run the squad. Perhaps you could find an older person who would be willing to act as a team advisor and “bad cop” if you think it would help.

You can check out some coaching resources here http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/coaching.htm Two of those books have good sections on starting up a team and becoming a new coach, so look into getting your hands on those.

Good luck. If this doesn’t work out, don’t worry. You have plenty of years ahead of you when you can coach.
