I am a cheerleader. I used to take gym but not very long. I am not very flexible though. I can perform standing backhand springs also. The more you stretch, the more flexible you begin to be! Flexibility is not required in order for you to be a cheerleader. There are several girls on my squad who can barely do a split. Hope I helped! 🙂

Being strong is more important than being super flexible, unless you’re a flyer, but even flyers have to be strong enough to hold themselves up in each stunt. I would say work on both your flexibility and your strength (weight training) and you’ll be on the right track. Knowing how to tumble usually helps you with try outs. More advanced squads will require certain tumbling skills, but those are higher level ones.
