How can I make the cheerleading team?

Question by Sarah: How can I make the cheerleading team?
Yes I know that cheer tryouts are not until the end of the year but I want to get a head start. So what should I work on to really higher my chances of getting on team? PLEASE HELP! Btw I will be trying out for 8th grade cheerleading.

You should go to tumbling classes, and if your school or another school hosts a cheer clinic you should definitely go to that. Also, go to some cheer camps over spring break or something. But a tumbling class will be beneficial. You might also want to participate in a winter cheer squad.

learn how to do a round off back-handspring at the least and may ask one of your guy friends to help you with some stunts

It’s good to start early! The other answerers are right–tumbling is important, so if you can take a class or at least have someone help you learn, that will give you a great start. And if you can take a clinic, that would be great, too. However, not everyone can afford to do so.
There are also other things the judges look for, like showmanship, correct moves, sharpness, posture, voice projection, jumps, etc… If you can take a clinic or go to a camp, great. If not, ask an older student who has been cheering for a while to help you. There are also DVDs out there that you can purchase or even check out from the library to help train you. You can look them up online. If your library doesn’t have them, you can get them through inter-library loan.
While you are practicing, try to do it in front of a mirror, and video yourself, if you can. Try to get feedback from someone more experienced. And practice, practice, practice all the time. Perfect a few really good jumps. Find out what they will be looking for in tryouts (it’s different at every school) and focus on those areas.
    Good luck to you!

First off, go to the coach and ask her what skills you will be needing for tryouts. It’s different everywhere.
My high school’s tryouts for basketball cheerleading were this week, and we had to be able to do 4 jumps and 2 cheers, but they taught them to us.
I would AT LEAST be sure to know four basic jumps:
    Toe Touch
    Left Hurdler
    Right Hurdler
    Pike

(Those are the ones we had to know)

The coach will probably be impressed if you go and ask this early, because it shows dedication. Plus, that way you’ll be absolutely sure you’re prepared.
