I was moved to action to help combat these horrific injuries: I went down to my local high school to volunteer to give deep tissue/internal massages as well as administer physical examinations to the all-female cheerleading team….lets nip this in the bud!

I Am Already Reluctant To Encourage This Sort Of Thing

I am not too surprised honestly. It really shouldn’t be though if proper precautions are taking place. There are regulations…like not doing lifts on hard surfaces, that schools and organizations are supposed to follow. Sadly they often don’t.

    I dont believe it.

Just like the housework studies that ignore mens traditional household contributions so they can say men are lazy around the house.

Football & hockey are less dangerous than cheerleading?

Sorry, I find it yet to be credible based on this one study that I havent had time to review yet for sample size, methodology, etc etc etc

Keep in mind that although 92.3% of all workplace deaths in the US are men, some still pretend that women do work that is equal to men even though equal work is EQUALLY dangerous

it makes sense, think about it if you throw someone in the air whats the likelihood that your going to catch them every time

This isn’t “news” to me at all, I’ve been well aware of this for quite some time.

I had never encouraged someone I know to take up cheerleading in the first place, besides the fact that it isn’t even a sport.

It makes sense. Football, hockey, those involve safety equipment, and impacts that can be skillfully managed. Rugby might be a contender, seeing as there is no equipment, but it still has the option of skillful impact management.

A cheerleader has no protective gear (as they shouldn’t), and is frequently put into positions where the impact cannot be successfully managed by the individual. Think about it. You are supposed to fall backwards and be caught. If you are not caught, you have a split second before you simply fall backwards directly into the ground.

I’m really not surprised, with all the aerial moves involved. But it wouldn’t be my place to discourage someone from taking up a sport unless they were visibly unqualified for it.

What do I think? I think BWAAAAAAA HA HA HA! Tell that to an MMA fighter, or a football/soccer/hockey player. Yeah, it’s dangerous. But not the most dangerous.

If I did discourage someone from being a cheerleader it would have more to do with the fact that most modern cheer routines are pretty darn stripper-y and I think it’s dumb. Not because it’s dangerous. Far be it from me to tell someone not to take risks – I enjoy downhill skiing, at rather startling speeds (hit a tree and die kinda thing).

Look at the article closely. There are still 10 male atheletes that die for every female. Notice how the article just had an agenda.

Competive cheerleading very well could be considered a sport.

    The article was crap.

I’m gonna be completely honest here and say that I find this incredibly hard to believe. The physical damage caused by football and hockey (where actual fights break out – seems more dangerous!) would more than likely be far greater than cheerleading. Then again, I’ve never done it, so I don’t know what it’s like.

If I read it right, it said it was the most female dominated sport that was dangerous. That would make sense, with all those air lifts and flips, you could seriously injure yourself if you didn’t land right. This would be akin to wrestling. Even the WWF has coordinated moves that can go wrong.

As far as ” the most dangerous sport around”, I would have to disagree. There are so many other sports, such as auto racing, mountain climbing, and contact sports that could leave one permanently disfigured or dead.

I would not discourage anyone to take up a sport they enjoy, but I would also encourage them to train well, and stay healthy and fit. There is more of a chance of accidental injury when one is tired and un-alert.

I wouldn’t want my kid to be a cheerleader regardless. I would rather them put their time and energy in more productive things, like learning to defend themselves and using their brains.

cheerleading is very dangerous, but if you have good bases, good coaches and a safe training environment then you should be fine. i know cheerleading is dangerous i have bruises down my arms after every training, someone on my team breaks a lib once or twice a year, at least one person gets injured or has an asthma attack at every comp. but i still tell everyone its the best sport!!! because it is, there are lots of another sports that are much more dangerous than cheerleading but they are covered more by the media and seen to be safer. thats article and those statistics mean nothing to me. (mostly because i live in Australia and we aren’t included in those statistics, i think our cheerleading is much more safe.)
