I’m a male too, Tenth grade. Yadda, yadda..

We at LEAST have to be able to do a backhand spring.
Some schools make you learn a routine, but ours didn’t, you should learn your hand stuff before though, just to be prepared(Half T, Candlesticks, High V, etc.)

Seeing how we’re both males, and males have more power, your coach is going to expect more tumbling from you.

Make sure your jumps are high. Your toe-touches need to be decent. Herkies and Hurdlers are good to have. Pikes were the easiest for me, so work on those too, but focus on toe-touches.

I’ve been taking tumbling lessons since November and I couldn’t even do a back-bend. Now I can do a layout, roundoff backhand spring, roundoff back tuck, standing back hand spring, punch front, front hand spring, and I’m working on my standing tuck.

Just make sure you enroll in a tumbling class, stay flexible, stretch every day, and work on your jumps.

most cheer try outs are the same. they look at your motions, jumps (toe touch, pike, hurteler). they look at how loud you are when you cheer. since you’re a guy they expect you to have a strong cheer voice. also tumbling. i would take some tumbling classes. you should be able to catch on quick since most guys do.

Okay well for our cheer tryouts they make us do a dance routine, some cheers, and some chants. Where I live they really want you to be energetic and loud. For tumbling you at least need a cartwheel down, which I almost have my backhand spring down. Here they make you go in 2 at a time and they choose your partners and you do your dance together and cheers and chants but you have to have a smile on your face at all times and very loud and energetic. For our tryouts we have a certain outfit but then again we have all girls so but we have to wear a white polo shirt and black soffe shorts and tennis shoes. If I were you I would take a tumbling class so you are really flexible and you can have nice jumps, flips, and everything else!!!!!!!!!

Ask the coach right now what level of tumbling is required. If you need anything as hard as a back handspring or tuck and you don’t have those, you may have to reconsider trying out. So be sure to ask the coach if tumbling is a requirement or just a bonus.

I’ve never seen guys learn the sideline dances, but some schools have their guys dance in their competition routines. So they may have you learn a few 8 counts to see how you do. They generally have you learn a few chants and cheers, and might possibly ask you to make up one of your own. And they’ll want to see your jumps and whatever tumbling you have. Odds are they will check out your stunting ability as well since stunting is a big part of cheering for guys.

    Good luck!
