Every coach has different expectations at tryouts. They should go over all of this for you at orientation and then more in depth on the first day of tryouts. Generally you do a cheer, chant, and dance. You want to have these down for the actual tryout day. For tryout week I have everyone start with learning motions, jump technique, and I watch how quickly they get material down, how they interact with others, and how they take direction. I also required people to do a basic thigh stand. Tumbling was encouraged but not expected. Anything I required members to know I demonstrated and went over and over at tryouts. Like I said every coach is different. Ask previous team members and see what was done last year. That would be a good indication of what will happen this time.

Cheerleading tryouts will differ per team depending on what the coach is looking for. You are probably going to need to dance, recite cheers, jump, and possibly tumbling.

For the dance you will probably learn a few 8 counts and be expected to preform them. It is really important for you to smile and put a lot of energy into the dance. Remember to to have sharp motions. Also, practice the dance, because even if you don’t do the dance perfectly the coach will respect if you try your hardest.

In our tryouts, we expect the new cheerleaders to learn two cheers, that are fairly simply. When doing the cheer remember to be sharp with your motions and punch them out. Also be loud, cheer from your stomach (your voice will get deeper so you won’t strain it) and SMILE!

Also, your going to have to do jumps. For sure you will be expected to do toe touches. You might have to do pikes, hurdlers and hurkies (you’ll be able to find pictures of these on google if you don’t already know what they are). The only way to better your jumps is to stretch.

Finally, you might have to tumble depending on your coach’s expectations for the team. I wouldn’t worry too much about this because on my j.v. team, tumbling isn’t a requirement. (and cheer is very serious at our school)

Best of luck and remember to smile!
