Cheerleading is a sport. You work hard, train, and compete. That’s what a sport is.

Allstar cheer is a sport, school cheer is not. The definition of a sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing.) All star cheer not only has rules, but is very highly competitive. Also, capabilities of the team and indivisual team members help decide who wins or looses. Because NOT ALL school teams compete, school cheer is not considered a sport. Yet, EVERY SINGLE All star cheer team competes, therefore, allstar cheer is a sport and school cheer is not. People may argue that yah, you have to train just as hard during school cheer, but it is TECHNICALLY NOT A SPORT!

I do competitive cheerleading and I can honestly say that that is a sport. Cheerleading is one of the only sports that works every part of your body and all of your muscles. Competitive cheerleading takes enthusiasm, strength, stamina, flexibility, and lots of ENDURANCE. I do not think that cheerleading for a school and cheering for basketball and football games is as much of a sport.

extreme/competitive cheerleading yes ! just regular no!because in extreme/competitive cheerleading you put blood sweat and tears in it just like any other sport you must stay in shape be on track, get good grades and be determined like any other sport!

hi . i am ancient type person dont know if that is an advantage or not . fishing is a sport, hot dog eating shown sports network , snooker is a sport, poker is also being considered a sport . it is a sexist idiotic statement that cheerleading is not a sport . it is a very demanding , sport , a dangerous sport injury wise , part ballet, part gymnastics , absoulutly no room for any slight timing error . skilled choregophay lasting longer than any play in football period . athletes making millions of dollars have teammates to cover there mistakes , a cheerleader makes a mistake not only is she or he hurt seriosly ,one other person minimum is also injured . cheerleaders are more conditioned . work better as a athletic team as the players on the field . it would take only three minutes too watch the effort put into this sport to change peoples mind . it is a sport and a very difficult one , people should watch then try . that is the answer

Cheerleaders are amazing most maintain a 3.8 G.P.A or higher. they have to have rhythm, gymnastics ability, strength, teamwork, dancing ability, hand-eye coordination, drive, lack of fear, balance, creativity, flexibility, memorization and the spirit to lift a crowd to their feet. I’m a competitive cheerleader but I have also played basketball, I run track, I’ve played volleyball, powder puff football, soccer. Honestly Yes they are all challenging but cheerleading is the most physically and mentally demanding and the most time consuming. It is also the sport where you are the most connected with your team members. It is like a great big family. So I think cheerleading is absolutely a sport and anyone who thinks it isn’t will get an ear full from me. And all those people who say school cheerleading ins’t a sport Newsflash… A lot of school cheerleading squads compete.

I agree with you, but there are a few holes in my reasons. So try to account for these. Maybe your teacher won’t notice the holes.
You try out -so does band, and drama productions.
Our school charges the SAME “sports fee” (yes it says “sports fee” on my bill-Verify.. Benicia High School, Benicia California) to participate as all other high school sports – band does not pay it.
We compete, and get scores-So does band
There are substantial injury’s- not many substantial band injury’s.
You must be physically fit to be on the team- Carrying a tuba in a parade, no piece of cake, I’ll admit.
You have practices, and a code of conduct, resembling other high school sports – Band same.
They show cheerleading on ESPN-(Sports network) -I think they show poker to.
Band and Drama get Grades for their participation, cheer doesn’t like all other sports.

My conclusion is.. make band a sport, and it will all make sense. Band is the closest thing to cheer that is still a school activity.
However, cheerleading has every other thing in common with every other high school sport. The only exception is if the team never competes. The mechanics of having judges at all football/basketball games would be a major pain but not impossible.
