Every school is different. Some have specific requirements, such as a back handspring or a back tuck. But most schools just hold a tryout, judge each contestant, and then put the highest scorers on the team. In cases like that, whether you can make it or not depends on how you compare to the other people trying out.

The best way to find out what it takes to make varsity at YOUR school is to ask the cheer coach or one of the cheerleaders. You could also search the school’s website or youtube and see if there are any videos showing the cheerleaders in action. If they’re all doing back handsprings, then chances are that’s what you’ll need to make the team.

At any school, you’re going to need good jumps: toes touches, hurdlers, herkies and pike jumps. Your motions have to be sharp and tight. You need a loud, strong voice. And you’ll probably need some tumbling skills. A layout or a full will probably guarantee you a spot on any varsity team. A back tuck or back handspring will give you a good chance. If you don’t have any tumbling skills, you’ll just need to make sure all your other skills are excellent.

    Good luck!
