Question by M and M: I’m going to try out for high school cheerleading and I have no past experience. Any tips?
I’ve never done cheerleading before, but I did gymnastics in 3rd grade. I’m not that flexible anymore, but I’m alright. I have till Feb. 9th to train. What moves do they normally ask you for tryouts and what can I learn to help me?

Learn to do the splits
A cartwheel
A roundoff
Standing Splits
Uhhh.. a back hand spring would be great.

You need to have good facials.
You should be able to tumble.
You should be able to backspot/base/fly (which ever spot you try out for)
Be able to do a part in a stunt group. (base, back-spot, or flier)
Know basic hand motions and jumps. (pike, toe touch..)
Cartwheels, roundoffs, the splits, or even a back handspring would be great experience.
Oh, and really be enthusiastic during tryouts. It shows the coach how motivated you are and how much you are into cheer, it’ll really earn you points with the coach.

im a sophmore and i made my high school cheer team for two years now. try outs are kind of scary but self-confidence is really important to sustain. the most important thing they look for is enthusiasm. don’t be over dramatic but keep a genuine smile on your face the whole time so u look like your having fun. make your motions very tight. practice , practice, practice the motions and/or dance they teach you over and over again so that your motions are so sharp that your arms hurt. do different types of jumps everyday so u get use to them. it will improve them with repetition. and tumbling is a plus but if you don’t have it just make up for it with the other aspects of the tryout. enthusiasm, sharpness, and make sure u look put together. don’t have messy hair or anything of that sort. good luck (:
