It depends on what level of schooling you are in. Some cheerleading teams do not do any stunts (meaning make pyramids, etc). For those teams, you should practice smiling a lot and projecting your voice (meaning be loud, but not high pitched – the sound should come from your gut). Jumps are also important (practice these by building leg muscle to jump higher and work lots on flexibility like splits). They will want you to learn a lot of cheer routines very quickly and have good movements during them. In cheerleading the movements should be extremely “sharp”. This means when you put your arms in a position, the arms should be very straight and you don’t just flop your arms there, you punch them there very quickly. Additionally, most cheerleading teams want you to have some basic gymnastics skills (depends on the team what is required). So, flexibility will help you with the jumps and gymnastics (also with the stunts that I talk about below).

Now, to get into teams that do stunts (this would be the only time your size actually matters – otherwise your size is unimportant). For all girl teams, there are 2 things you can be – you can be the person that holds people up (the base), or the person that is held up (flyer or top). The base(s) must be very strong (no need to be skinny) and the top should be smaller and able to remain very tight in all their muscles so they are easier to hold. The top should also be very trusting. For teams with boys and girls, all the boys are the bases and all the girls are the tops. Since the guys are typically stronger anyways, the girl tops don’t have to be quite as small, but the stunts you do will be much harder and scarier.

My best recommendation is that you take some classes in tumbling at a gymnastics center. Most places actually have special tumbling classes for cheerleaders. This will help you with your jumps, gymnastics, flexibility, strength, etc.

    Good luck!

you need to work harder then everyone else on the team

sriously practice practice practice don’t let anyone show you off and show your coaches that your making this extra effort.

    K here we go

first off you always have to keep tight! stay focused and have confidence!!!

You can do it if u believe in yourself and keep yourself commited.

    extensions:
-push hard off your bases sholders to help them get that extra push up, half the work on getting up there should be u it can’t be all on them. once your up there keep your butt pinched and knees locked. hen u are cradled RIDE IT. breath inraise your arms over your sholders and ride it until your breath in is gone then snap!

    Libs
    – Always make sure your Leg is to you knee
-see things above about locking out
    – make sure your arms arte in a perfect High V

    Twisting
-high v throw it hard to left or right. Look to whatever sholder u throw your arms to. When u look it goes so fast.
-try balencing on a soup can on your own

Always be streching to try and get new tricks

LEARN how to base or they will never take u on a college team, when u try out u have to do both to get on, they love diversity, even if your super tiny it’s a plus

I get that fear on and off. I can do a round off back hand spring on a mat in a gym or in front of a cheering crowd at a basket ball game but thats it.

I lost my standing once i got used to running and got a huge fear of it for 3 years and just did running ones. I just had to try out for my college team and when u are under pressure to have to do something like that on the spot it just comes to you.

Go to a gym and keep doing them with someone there, once they know u are good doing them they will prob move there hand away and then eventually move away completly…

    take it in steps

you will get it back just whip it out like u know u can and don’t hesitate to long before u throw it or it will never go.
