If you know how to do a backhandspring for tryouts, it will really help you out. A backflip will greatly improve your chances. No cartwheels…that’s too much of a beginners thing and will lead to embarrassment. Also make sure to practice your jumps everyday before tryouts. The toe touch is the most popular and you will definately need to master that before tryouts. If you can, it might also benefit you to learn a side hurdeler just to show that you know more than just one type of jump.

If you don’t already know how to do a backhandspring…you aren’t going to learn on your own….you will need to take a gymnastics class. You could learn how to jump on your own…but I am very doubtful that your form will be correct if you don’t have a coach. Basically….you need to find a gynastics/cheer class to enroll in so you are adequately prepared.

Also make sure your motions are sharp and your words aren’t “sing songy”—but sharp as well. Other than that have fun…and SMILE!

well iv been on the cheerleading squad since i was able to be on it. no i dont have my handsprings or walkovers or anything like that but i know that having them will help you make the squad. kartwheel you should know, and round off too. it would also be a good thing to get some upper body strength so you can base backspot and fly in stunts. splits would also be a good thing to get good at. a good way to strech your splits is to do them every day. or forward rolls will strech them out too, that is when you sit in the straddle possition and roll forward so your on your stomach then roll back to your original possition. do that about 8 times a day every daay adn your splits will improve. also you could get help from like other cheerleaders or a gymnastix coach or something. well i hope you make the squad. Good Luck!!!

Start taking tumbling lessons – private lessons are the best, but they’re a little expensive. Worth it though if this is what you want to do. Well, this was how it worked at my school. You needed to have a back handspring for the varsity team, but if it was your first season with the team you were put on jv anyway sometimes even if you had a handspring. If you have a back tuck, they’ll be REALLY impressed with you. I agree with the other answerer, try to avoid doing a cartwheel. Since back handsprings take time, you should start working on them now, but also start to learn the in-between of easy and hard – back walkovers. You’ll probably be able to master these more quickly than handsprings, so if tryouts are soon you’ll have a better shot at learn them in time. At my school, you could make the jv team with walkovers. Ask your new tumbling coach about walkovers when you start taking lessons. Ask the high school cheer coach, or a girl already on the team, what the tumbling requirements are, they’ll know better than me. And ask your tumbling coach what skill you have the best shot at mastering before tryouts. Good luck!
