a normal cheerleading tryout consists of:
– a dance
– a cheer
– jumps

the dance will be a few counts of 8 and will be a routine alike to one in a competition routine

the cheer will be a couple minutes long and most likely repetetive
the side lines will be very easy and short
and the jumps (they will look at flexiblility, tightness, and most of all your approach)

if your school has multiple day tryouts (they should…) then PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!!!! when you get home from the first day (the day you will learn all you need to know) practice EVERYTHING in the MIRRORR! you need to be tight and sharp with all your moves.

most cheer squads do not care if you can do a round off or a cartwheel so when they ask if anyone can tumble, do not say “yes i can do a roundoff!” “yess i can do a cartwheel” because they will think you are an idiot (not trying to be rude sorry) but by tumbling they mean backhandsprings (AT THE LEAST)… anone can do a cartwheel.

GOODLUCK.

  1. Jessica

    Mainly:
    1. A Dance
    2. A Cheer
    3. Spirit!!
    4. Flexibility or Spotting for mounts and things
Some jumps are pike, straddle, and tuck. Some moves are backbends, splits, scorpion, and flips. Just have a lot of spirit and when you are doing moves don’t be noodley haha be stiffer not like a body builder but stiff good luck!

definately make sure you have your cartwheel and roundoff perfect ! do not do any stunts , tricks , or jumps you are not confident with . work on your splits. they help with flexibilty in the air .

    split stretches-
    1. get on the floor like you are going to propose and put your best leg forward ( the leg in the front in your split ) and grab your foot on your back leg . lean forward and back . i hold forward for five then back for five three times in a row .
    2. get in a straddle on the floor and cup your hands around your best leg and put your nose to your knee . it will be painful if you arent too flexible but hold it for as long as possible !
    3. straddle again but go to the middle . this is even painful for me but im flexible ! once again hold for as long as possible .
    4. sit in pike and take your best leg with the opposite hand, put your leg in the air and pull towards your face with your opposite arm . keep your butt on the ground . dont bend your leg .
    5. go like you are going into a handstand and life your ‘ bad leg ‘ and keep your hands on the ground and put your nose as close to your best legs knee as possible.
    6. oversplits time : ) get a cushion ( i personally use 2 ) and put your heel and a little bit of you best leg on the pillow. go into your splits. hold this for about two minutes . it will hurt alot but it helps so much !

stretch everyday . i do in the morning and at night . i would do about 10 jumping jacks then stretch so your muscles are ‘ warm ‘ . also go into your bridge and walk your feet in and out everyday : ) crunches, pushups, and lunges will build muscle .

the night before tryouts pack your bag and go to bed early . the last thing you want is five hours of sleep and walking into that gym negative ! drink lots of water all the time !

when you get to tryouts always keep a positive mind and smile constantly even if you mess up ! if you arent understanding the cheer or stunt ask a junior or senior to help you . if you have friends trying out practice together . practice practice practice . practice until it becomes muscle memory !

if you can get into a tumbling class/ stunt class do! if not try and go to open gym at your local gymnastics gym and you can ask a coach for help ! its 10 dollars at my gym for open .

do your best and dont take it offensively no matter the verdict . most girls start practicing five days before clinic ! it will be to your advantage that you are starting early!

you can work on your jumps but dont do anything thats not worth showing off ! try your hardest and keep your chin up . there can be a girl next to you who is an amazing tumbler but if she doesnt have any spirit and isnt getting herself noticed she wont be a threat : ) when you go into the room you can shout ( projecting from your stomach not throat you dont want to sound screechy ) say go big ‘ team name ‘ and it will feel silly but its what they want ! smile and be spirited !

i dont know how badly you want it but no matter what this will help : )

    generally the requirements are
    1. a cheer
    2. a dance
    3. stunts/ tumbling.

girls who have scorpions/ bows and arrows, tucks, fulls and combos will get extra points but keep your head up!
