Save My Daughter PART 4

An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder, and anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Family members of victims often suffer the consequences of the disease as well. Are there early warning signs to watch out for? What can you do if you suspect a loved one is anorexic or bulimic?

@julieandrews9 She went to an inpatient treatment, gained weight, and is now at a healthy weight. She is doing amazing and still coaching cheerleading and gymnastics in our hometown. Although it is still a struggle everyday, she is doing extremely well, going to school for education and loving life.

redheadsforevs77: the goal of a bulimic isn’t not to keep a healthy body weight. They will lose as much weight as they can. They only usually have a higher weight than anorexics because purging isn’t as effective for weight loss

okay well the literature i’ve read on it has led me to think differently. at first glance, yes one would think she’s bulimic, but clinically it seems she could be diagnosed ‘anorexic with bulimic tendencies’.
    for example,
“A person may binge eat…due to legitimate hunger, if the person has previously been restricting food intake. This is why even people with anorexia may develop bulimic tendencies…”
    – from a well-referenced article, at essay depot: “anorexia vs bulimia”

She’s getting smaller and smaller THAT is Bulimia Nervosa.
Bulimics can maintain a healthy body weight as well.
She has anorexic tendencies but she IS bulimic.

as far as i understand, she is anorexic. the difference between her and a bulimic is that she binges/purges with the goal to ensure a BELOW average body weight – whereas bulimics usually maintain average body weights.

He mentions “anorexia” too much… i mean, a significant proportion of the symptoms that he described was “bulimia”…

ohk so i hav an ed and the thing he said abt being anorexic and at deaths door would have triggered the hell out of me… he should be more careful abt what he says

Suicide is a major cause of death for those with an ED. I’d consider that on death’s door, even if it’s not the literal sense so to speak.
But I do know what you mean! I still say I’m not on death’s door.

  9. pixelperfect09

    i got what he said.
i have an ED and im not on death’s door. from the face and body i look normal, my head is what’s fucked up and the weightloss is just a side effect of it.
not all anorexics end up body, it’s all about bone structure and your muscle mass

Yep. Which is why he shouldn’t have said what he said. She is in need of treatment just as much as anyone else.

But she said that she has an irregular heart beat so she clearly has the electrolyte abnormalities that can cause a heart attack. This is a common cause of death for bulimics and is even more likely if the bulimic is also restricting/underweight.

I agree too. Purging 4 times on a good day is what I would consider on death’s door…no matter what the weight.

poisoned–I take back my first comment reply to you. I thought you were making reference to what he said at the BEGINNING of this clip. My bad. Im sorry. I now, after watch the entire clip-agree with you completely. He should NOT have said that.

poisoned-she IS on death’s door. ANYONE with an ED is on death’s door. I didnt hear him say anything about her not being “sick enough.” He emphasizes that Sherri is VERY sick. He tells her she COULD die. You cant base anyone’s level of illness on their body size or appearance. It’s the behavior that makes you sick or “sick enough.”

& my POV: she IS on death door and she IS thin enough to be considered sick enough.

  15. poisonedxveins

Dr. Phil really shouldn’t have said the whole being on death’s door thing. He basically said she wasn’t ill enough to be severely anorexic or close to death. I know as someone with an ED I would have taken that pretty badly. I would have taken it as “I’m still not thin enough to be considered sick enough”. Just my POV. Otherwise he didn’t do too badly on this one lol.
