Q&A: Can I try out for cheerleading without being able to do flips?

Question by b_cheer_full: Can I try out for cheerleading without being able to do flips?
I love cheerleading and I consider myself a pretty good one. I was on the top squad in middle school and when high school tryouts for cheer come up soon i want to be able to make a squad! But my classmates who are on our school’s squad right now said that you need to be able to do a back hand spring and a back flip and other stuff and all i can do is a somersault, cartwheel, and round off! Is it possible for me to make the squad?!

weeelllll . . .

that depends on your schools rules for there individual cheerleading team 🙂

At the high school I will be cheering at you need to have really good jumps be very stable at your position (top/base/back) and be really flexible. Tumbling is good to but it is not necessary if you can stand out in another way. If you can do a cartwheel or a front walkover then show them. 🙂

all i can do is a forward roll, cartwheel, roundoff, backbend, and front handspring but even that is good but I guess that also depends on your high schools team:)

My cheerleading coach used to cheer at the high school I’m going to so thats how I know what I need to be ready for 🙂

you should go see what is required so you can start a.s.a.p. working really hard on the requirements

also make sure you sre stretching every day and by try-outs you should have gained alot more flexibility (make sure you are not just stretching your splits you back is really important as well!!!!)

If you want to or you can go in tumbling at a gym near you so that you may learna few things before try-outs or if tryouts are really soon you can still tryout but then keep learning at tumbling and then you will forsure by the end of this cheer year you will have you bhs and whatever else you want if you work really hard.

    Hey B cheer!

Well as a coach and cheer judge i would say the best thing to do is to talk to your cheer coach or advisor… get an idea of what the team is looking for.. if the team is not that competative you should be ok as long as you build up your other cheer skills.. I always say that its not all about tumbling or stunting of dance.. its having a well rounded cheer athlete on the team… so once you find out about the team and things you need.. work on as much as you can.. you dont need to tumble 100% but let the coach see that youre trying… so look into beginning tumbling classes at a gymnastics gym and if the gym has a cheer program there you can probably work with one of the coaches to work on jumps and motions and things… You can also work with some of the cheerleaders that currently cheer on the team you want to cheer on. Sometimes coaches put that tumbling is a needed thing to weed out al lot of people that cant really do much. Just show that you have potential and keep working!!! youll do awesome!!! :):):):):):)
