How much gymnastics ability do you need to have to be a cheerleader at public school?

Question by Carry P: How much gymnastics ability do you need to have to be a cheerleader at public school?
I’m going back to public high school next year and I was thinking about cheerleading because I think it might be fun. (They didn’t have a squad at my old school) And I was wondering how much gymnastic ability you need to tryout. (I have a little but I’m not sure if it’s enough)

For some schools you don’t need any gymnastics ability, but that’s fairly rare. At most schools, having your back handspring makes you pretty solid for tryouts and for making the team. But, for some schools, it may be more or less.

Actually you don’t need any the most they will want form you is a back walkover and a cartwheel also a roll but thats simple,i was a cheerleader last year it is so fun and performing is addicting,im also going into high school on a 1st place winning team so good luck btw work on all of your jumps hight and tightness will help you in the long run.

Only the coach of the team can answer this for you.

If there is no required skill for tumbling I would still say get into a class. Most times coaches choose people with tumbling skills over people who haven’t got them.

Also, starting now nearly every day you should work on tumbling drills, exercising and stretching, and jumps and motions in order to get ready for tryouts. You can find articles, pictures, and videos of all those things here: http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/basics.htm

    Good luck!
