What does it take to make a JV Cheerleading team?

Question by Dominique W: What does it take to make a JV Cheerleading team?
I’m in 8 grade and I really want to do cheerleading next year and I have hardly no experience. I’m really athletic and I’m really perky but, is that enough to make to jv high school squad. I don’t know how to do and handsprings or anything like that either? What do I do?

    thats good
    (=
    you could take tumbling classes
and at tryouts remeber smile, be tight with each motion and sit into your jumps and just have fun they will see that and it will all be ok

    good luck

Well Im in 8th grade too and my Highschool’s JV coach said that we just need to know how to do cartwheels and how to stunt. Just learn how to do a cartwheel and a roundoff (look on youtube if you don’t know what these are) and work on your jumps (look on youtube for these too) when it comes to jumps, try to get your toe-touch (or wide eagle), Pike, herkey (left and right), double nine (this is really hard so it may take a while). Yeah thats pretty the basic stuff. You could also learn all of the arm positions. Those are helpful. Also, you could try working on stunts if you are flexible (and want to be a flyer). Work on your heelstretch (lay on your back try pulling your lift foot to your face and then try it standing up and balancing, but don’t hold it to your face. Hold it out to the side. The reason I said left is because most cheer squads do ALL of their stunting on their left. You could also get someone to help you with this), your scorpion (this is the coolest! its where you pull your left leg backwards over your head and hold it with your right hand and stick your left hand up in the air. You can stretch by laying on the ground, holding your leg back and having someone push down on it for a min. If you don’t have anyone to help you, you could also use a blanket and fold it the long way, lay on your back, swing the middle of the blanket around your left ankle and use your right hand to hold the ends of the blanket over your head and hold for 60 seconds, but you won’t be able to brethe for a while so be prepared) and you bow & arrow (the most painful-looking, its when you hold your left leg all the way up aginst your head and grab your left ankle with your right hand and bring your left arm around the front of your left leg and stick it out sideways. You can do this by laying on your back and getting someone to push down or sit on your left leg for 60 secconds). These are simple things that could get you on the squad.

Just don’t loose confidence (because there will be more skilled girls there) and do your best.

Just being perky and really athletic is not all that it takes to be on a squad. First you will need to know your motions (high and low touchdown, high and low v, left and right diagonal, left and right k, go, bow n arrow etc). Second you will need to know your jumps (high kick, toe touch, double toe touch, left and right herkies, left and right hurdlers, and maybe a pike or double 9). Third you will need to know your stunts (heel stretch, scorpion, arabesque, liberty, stretch liberty, and maybe a bow n arrow etc). You need to start stretching a lot if you would like to be on a squad and you need to do it a lot….every single day up and till try outs. Next, remember you must be able to have a loud voice but never ever strain it by yelling…talk clearly where it will be able to carry. Do remember to smile all the time and never stop, keep your perky attitude.

well, it really depends on your school. as a freshman this year i didn’t have to do try outs, there was only a dozen girls on the team, and because of the low interest, we didn’t need any experience.

on the other hand, at many schools, there is lots of interest and cheer squads are very difficult to get on. Just incase your school happens to be one of these schools, i would work on a couple things.

you don’t need to be able to do tons of tumbling to cheerlead, though even doing a cartwheel or a sommersault will boost your score at tryouts. no matter what, at tryouts it is important to try to at least do something during the tumbling section (if there is one, if not they will probably ask what you can do)

for tryouts, you should probably be able to do at least two kinds of jumps. A herkie jump and a toe-touch (emphasis on toe touch) are very important. if you don’t have skills at other jumps, just smile and pretend you did well, and when these two jumps come up, let’s hope they will be top notch.

as well, you will want to have a smile throughout try outs, also, hold your head up high and keep your back straight to give the illusion that you are confident (no matter how worried you are!) also, when doing cheers, you should try really hard to smile, but use a vocal, loud and low voice.

the most important thing is if you make mistakes at tryouts, still smile and pretend they didn’t happen. seriously, this is the mistake i made when i tried out for my school’s dance team.

these pages will probably help you out a bit.
