What ability does it take to be a cheerleader?

Question by summerlovin: What ability does it take to be a cheerleader?
I know you have to be physicaly fit to be a cheerleader, but do you need to know any certain tricks at the 13-14 age level? I really want to become one, but I cant even do a flip! Is that OK or not?

It would be nice if a current cheerleader of that age level or expederienced that age level answered the question.

I havent been a cheerleader, but I have looked into it before. While it may be helpful to know how to tumble and know your jumps, it is not completely necessary. Most squads, if you try out for your school, work on improving these things, but if you attend a big school that prides itself on the abilities of their cheerleaders, you may need to learn at least a cart-wheel, round-off, and back hand spring.

here is the answer from a cheer coach. You have the first ingredient of a good cheerleader – – desire! Are the skills helpful? Yes, but not the end of the line. Find a gym in your town and take some tumbling classes. Tell the coach you are intrested in cheer and they may have some tips for you. The gym I coach in has beginner cheer classes and yours may have the same. Stick to your dream. It can be hard work but it is the best time you will ever have.

Always keep a positive attitude and go for it.
    good luck

i’m not a cheerleader but i’m a 14 year old gymnast. i also have friends who are in cheerleading but can’t do the handsprings and stuff. you need to be good in dancing, if not in stunts, but most teams will require you to have a background in stunts. if that’s the case, try learning simple stunts like cartwheels, handstands, walkovers, etc. over the summer break or during your free time so you’ll be able to have a bit of an advantage. also, if you do get in with just purely dance (like my friend), most teams will include stunts training during practices, so you’ll end up learning!
just have good upper body strength (if you can’t flip, you’ll lift), flexibility, fresh ideas and extremely good dancing skills!
