Q&A: What should I do to pre pare for cheerleading tryouts?

Question by Stalking Kate(:: What should I do to pre pare for cheerleading tryouts?
I want to try out for cheerleading at my school.
What do you think I would need to know to get on JV? Varsity?
To pre pare myself should I take gymnastic classes?
I have 4 or 5 months.

I would start with gymnastics to become more flexible. Work on your jumps. Watch cheerleading competitions or movies. Cheerleading is becoming a very tough sport so the better prepared you are the easier it will be. To get on JV you will have to have awsome jumps and probably know how to do a minimum of a round-off back handspring.

I cheered for 7 years and loved it. It is so much fun and you will form such tight friendships! Good luck!!

since you have 4 or 5 months it’d be a great idea to start gymnastics. it’ll help you a whole lot. if you can, try to find someone who’s been a cheerleader for a while and can give you some advice and show you a few things that could help you be more prepared. theres usually someone like that at a gymnastics place or at least someone who could refer you to someone who could help.

there are even youtube videos of cheerleaders and whatnot that you could watch to help you out a bit too.

    good luck! 🙂

Tumbling/cheer classes would be better. Beginners gymnastics wouldn’t help you that much (believe me, Ive done it) you need to take a tumbling class. Stretch and condition. Try to run a mile a day when it gets warmer outside to prepare (that’s what Im doing). JV depends on each school. Some don’t require you to have much tumbling. A stand back handspring is fine. I didn’t even tumble when I was on JV (even though I could tehe =) and you need to have okay jumps. They don’t have to be perfect, but they should be powerful and can be mediocre. To make varsity, you have to have REALLY good jumps and should be able to do at least a roundoff back handspring (but that’s the minimum).
