Your thesis seems a little long, kind of like a run on sentence. I’m not a cheerleader so bare with me… you could say something like:

‘2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate!?’ To most people this sounds like a silly cheer but cheers like this one are only a fraction of what is involved in the sport of cheerleading.

You could change that cheer of course… that’s just the only one I know. And then lead into your main points about what makes it a sport.

Since cheer has been getting a really bad rap in the media for being an increasingly “dangerous” spor” you can rattle of some statistics showing otherwise. You can also debate whether or not the issue of safety of cheer vs. football or another sport is also a sexist issue since people seem to worry more about the cheerleaders (despite the fact they are not all girls) than the football players.

From there you can tie into the history bit, cheerleaders were originally men and the bigger stunts have really only been in vogue for a few decades, and explain that as the sport has evolved so has the difficulty level.

But please be sure to underscore that the big fear of cheer being too dangerous is hooey, and back it up with figures and also explanations of how the issue has been conflated: IE We make more emergency room visits because unlike other sport teams in the schools we don’t always have access to the trainers. Also, the explosion of all-star cheer has increased the number of cheerleaders overall, therefore the number of injuries should also be expected to rise..
