How to calm your nerves before your first cheerleading competition?

Question by Kibbles: How to calm your nerves before your first cheerleading competition?
Okay so my school only competes in cheerleading on varsity level. I made the competition squad and we’ve been working on our routine since June. Our first competition is in exactly one week! I am so nervous because it’s my first time competing. I am a flier and we do numerous stunts and I’m scared I’ll let my team down by letting my nerves get to me and not hitting a stunt. Does anyone know what I can do to calm my nerves before the competition?

Go over, and over in your mind doing the routine perfectly.

Greg Louganis, a champion platform diver, did numerous dives perfectly. People thought he would always be that way. One day, on an important dive, Greg hit his head on the platform, and messed up on is dive. Later, when he was asked why he messed up on a dive that he had done previously in perfect form, Greg revealed that just before doing the dive he thought about a dive that he messed up on.

Definitely a lesson to be learned for any athlete that wants to do their best.

If you keep thinking about messing up, then you are going to mess up. Take some time out each morning, and in the afternoon to play in your mind doing your routine perfectly, and confidently. Then afterwards, say to yourself, “It is normal for me to perform perfectly and confidently”.

What you are doing is training your subconscious mind to perform the way you want it to. Even if you don’t believe it right now, your subconscious doesn’t know it. It just goes with whatever you keep doing over, and over again. A proverb that I really like “You’re more likely to believe a lie you tell yourself a thousand times than a truth you tell yourself once.”

Hope this helps. Good luck with your competition! 🙂
