How can I get better at cheerleading?

Question by cocopuff: How can I get better at cheerleading?
I’m going into 8th grade and my school doesn’t have a cheerleading program, so I’ve been looking for some outside of school. I don’t know what to expect though. I’m not very flexible (although i’ve been stretching) and i can’t even to a cartwheel. What are some tips to start being able to do those things? What do you normally do at tryouts? HELP!

Since your school doesn’t offer cheerleading, you’ll probably be joining an Allstar team. What I would advise you to do is:
-STRETCH! every single day!
-see if you could sign up for once a week tumbling classes at your local gym or YMCA
-and if you know anyone who is a cheerleader or who is on that team, then ask them if they could teach you the technique for stunting and jumping (a lot of teams have different techniques)

As tryouts go, be prepared to:
-learn a dance that’s a few 8 counts long
-learn a cheer
-do a running and/or standing tumbling pass
-get tested on flexibility
-get tested on jumps
-(f you’re small and could be a flyer) get tested on stunting skills

But have fun and show confidence! Coaches also look for that, so smile! That’s what being a cheerleader is all about! Good luck!
