If you don’t have cheerleading experience, get some gymnastics / tumbling experience so you can do some flips, splits, ect.

Preferably skinnyish and if you are tall good upper body strength and good tumbling skills. You will need to learn a lot of cheers and routines so good memorization in that area. Go to your local gym and see if there are classes. By 9th grade experience is encouraged so practice!

and remember to SMILE, SPARKLE, and SHINE!

    good luck!

i think the main key is to have alot of energy and “spunkiness”

alot of schools wont expect girls to have cheerleading experience going into highschool

Some schools have 2 cheerleading squads (varsity and JV), others don’t.

If you want to make the squad, I’d practice. Ask a friend or friend’s older sister to teach you some stuff. You have to try out, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, the chances of you making it are very slim. As far as specific height/weight. Not necessarily. It may depend on your school. I know the sterotypical cheerleader is thin, blonde hair…etc… This is not really the case, at least in most schools. Your weight really might only make the difference between whether you’re a ‘spotter’ or a ‘flyer’.
Anyways,so practice, practice, practice! Practice doing the splits, practice jumping, even try running..it’ll help build endurance; it’s not easy being a cheerleader.

And, most of all, good luck! =]

I’ve been a cheerleader since I was 7. I’m also going into the 9th grade. You don’t have to be a certain hight or weight even though it’s a steriotype that you have to be tall and skinny. You don’t have to be experienced but you do have to no some things. In high school there are varsity and junior varsity squads (in some high schools). You need to no how to do the basic cheering jumps, always loud, cheerful, coordinated, and cartwheel/round off is always good. In certain high schools there are certain things you need to do to make the team. So in order to help your chances of making the team even more find out what the requirements are. Check out the websites below for some more basic information.

you dont have to be a specific weight or height unless the squad ur trying out for requires it (which i doubt) you just need to have upper body strenght and be all around fit. Cheer experince is good but no neccessary. take a tumbling class and make sure you know the moves and jumps before you try out it will help a lot. GOOD LUCk

I myself am a cheerleader and I have to say it can be a lot of fun but also a lot of work. You do not need to be any specific height or weight, that doesn’t matter.. there are girls on my squad that are short, tall, skinny and big. There is a need for all shapes and sizes of girls when you are stunting so no, height or weight has nothing to do with it. Also, you do not necessarily have to have cheerleading experience you may be one of those who can catch on quick. However, I do recommend getting into some gymnastics, even if your squad doesn’t tumble it will only benefit you in the long run. I don’t think there is any such thing as beginners cheerleading but of course I may be wrong. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get to have the amazing experiences with cheerleading that I have.

hey! well im going into 9th grade and i just made my JV cheer squad.

You will probably find out more information because most schools hold CLINICS before the acutal tryouts.clinics last from about 2-4 days. and it teaches you jumps, the cheers, chants, and dance moves that you will have to do at the tryouts in order to make the team. to gurantee a spot on the team: you must have:

    1) School Spirit
    2) A great smile, not a Fake one
    3) Flexibility and leg strength
    4) Cooperation

What judges look for at tryotus are confidence. If you make a mistake, your not supposed to cry and run away. You pretend like that mistake did not happen and continue with whatever routine you were just doing. Make sure you smile! that is very very important. Your movements also have to stiff and straight. No wobbly high V’s or anything like that.

Basically, you will soon find more information if you keep looking into it and if you really want to make the team, then it will show. You also have to have a great attitude because people look up to cheerleaders in their school.

Also: what kind of cheer is your cheer squad?

if it is: competitional then if you have no cheer experience it will be pretty much rare luck that you make it in. because competitional cheer squads are serious and compete all over the place and you have to have a LOT LOT of cheer experience.

if it is spirit (like mine): you will probably compete in about at least 2 compettions (like mine haha) and your mostly there to cheer on major sports like basketball and football. that is why it is called spirit!

so i hope you get it. i already love cheerleading it is fun but it requires a LOT of time. so if you dont have time, i reccommend not trying out.

Tip: you MIGHT get intimidated by other girls, but what i think about is myself and instead of watching other girls and thinking omg they are soo making it! just think about yourself. Dont have tooo much confidence but have enough so that the judges could see it clearly! and also make eye contact!

    GOOD LUCK!

Everyone starts off.I started off on a all-star team and they just started throwing me up in the air. As long as you try your best and listen and pratice practice practice you will be the bomb!

Im in cheerleading right now and i’ve been in it for almost four years now. Cheerleaders can be of any shape or size because differently built girls are needed for stunting. But you do have to be in shape for cheer because depending on your school & coach & team, it can be a very hard thing that requires dedication & hard work. Beginners usually make JV & Varsity usually requires tumbling skills. Maybe try enrolling in a class to help improve and give you some basic cheer knowledge at a local ALLSTAR gym.

no, you don’t have to be a specific height or weight…but you do have to be good at the sport!!! i am a flyer on a ALLSTARS team. i am also going into 9th grade & trying out for cheerleading. you need to be flexiable if you want to be a flyer. people know me at my cheer gym because i am so flexiable. you probably need to have some tumbling like a back-handspring, tuck, & etc. you need to make sure your jumps are high and prep well in them and also make sure you land clean! OH!, always always have a smile on your face no matter what. you are riquired to know a dance for tryouts [the coach will teach you the dance] when you perform the dance, perform it with attiude, work it! also make facials during the performace. during th clinic/camp makesure you look very clean, have your hair pulled back in a hight ponytail wear a bow/ribbon in it, and wear soffe’s and i would wear my dance shirt [if you have on] that will show that you have some kind of expirnce with the dance moves & that way they will rember you. the day of tryouts you should probably wear your school colors/whatever they tell you to wear & a matching bow/ribbon.

**it would probably be a good idea to meet some people at the clinic/camp & practice with them the day before tryouts.
**also try to talk to the coach while you are there, this will make you stand out, and she or he will rember you because of it

    GOOD LUCK!! [:

Well when I first tried out for cheerleading i didnot make it …. Cheerleading 101 are offered at most gyms… You should go get some tumbling lessons.. I did and now I am on a all star team

    well i have a personal story for…
until 6th grade i thought cheerleading was a joke. i thought cheerleaders were ditzy, slutty and no point in it. until by (now ex) bff asked me to tryout for the 7th/8th grade squad. i laughed at her for a lil but then i actually thought it sounded like fun. she had been cheering for years and i never even attempted the splits. i told my mom and i started practicing EVERY day. my friend never practice once. i took tumbling classes. so when tryouts came i was physically more prepared for it than she was. i made the squad and she didnt. well the point is, you dont have to has years of experience. you just have to want it more than anything. now im on the 8th grade squad and i almost have a back handspring. i love cheering and i dont know wat i would do without it.

A lot of people say they are looking for skinny girls. If your tall you can always be a back/font spotter. Or if your not so skinny you might be a base. You should stretch a lot to become more flexible. Also a tumbling class would help too. Practice making tight fists and being sharp in the mirror. Also don’t forget to have fun with it. Always smile!!
