Can I become a cheerleader in high school?

Question by Valerie H: Can I become a cheerleader in high school?
I’ve been dancing my whole life so I have that down, but I can’t do back handsprings or anything like that. I’m going to be a freshman and the cheer and dance team are combined and I think cheer would be fun, do you think I’d have to have experience in cheer to make the team. Any advice on what I should do now or with the tryouts?

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT SO PRACTICE A LOT. OF COURSE WHY NOT? REMEMBER DO WHAT IT DO WHILE YOU’RE AT IT!!!

yes you can i am 13 and made the varsity football cheerleading team. if you know dancing you have a good chance. maybe you could learn some cheer stuff before tryouts like the basics so the judges think you atleast know something
i wish you the best of luck try out see what happens and if you dont make it try next year you still have all of high school.

Well, you should go ask the cheerleading coach if tumbling is required to join
the squad. Some do some don’t. Most likely if you’re good at everything else,
they’ll let you join and teach you that later. Or you can make the squad and
cheer at games and stuff, parades you know. But, you may not make the
competition team, if it requires tumbling. What you could is take a tumbling
class so you kinda have an idea of what’s going if they are needed at
tryouts. You just need to realize, cheer is harder than dance. You have,
stunts to pull, people to catch, or if you’re a flyer, whatever you do don’t
have the people catching you on the wrong side. They can screw you over. Just
remember, you need to smile and facials, and strong arm movements. The best
thing is to do is to get someone to try out with you. A

it seems that if you are flexible and you can do the moves you do have a pretty good chance of making it on the cheerleading team. if i were you, personally, i would ask if tumbling is required.
probably as long as you can do a cartwheel, you should be fine.
i would suggest that if you get into the team, take gymnastics so you can improve.
and if you are rejected from tryouts, then you should take gymnastics this year and try out next year, so you have EVERYTHING down!

    i really hope i helped!

Ask your gym coach or someone who would know what you need to do when you try-out. If you can’t do some of the things, try getting a teacher at a local Gymnastics place, or something. Ask someone you know to help you with it.

I’m sure you can make the team! Fortunately, because you’ve been dancing a long time, you have the flexibility and coordination required for cheerleading. Make sure you know every cheer technique that’s required for the try-outs, then find a friend to help you. It’s really hard to learn back handsprings and cartwheels without someone else’s help. Most cheer teams don’t expect perfection for try-outs (especially newbies), so don’t worry too much about getting it down pat. Just be sure it looks like you put in effort.

Some tips to learning to do bhs: do a bridge (arch your back while in a crab-like pose) everyday and hold it for 30 sec. Then practice going into that position from a standing position. Go to a gymnastics studio where there are mats and trampolines that can help you with the jumps.

    Good luck!

Oh yea, of course you can do cheer! I’m ganna be a sophomore this year, and last year i was a freshman cheerleader. You don’t have to know how to do a back handspring or anything. I was the only person on the J.V squad who could do a backhand spring, and a lot of people who made it couldn’t. It’s good to have a good toe touch and being flexible is a big plus! I think you’ll do just fine if you have had danced before. But yea, high school is when a lot of people start cheer. 🙂

Ask the coach if tumbling is required, if yes or if you want to anyway, take tumbling lessons.

Dancers, unless they are pom squad, tend to be very fluid and loose in their movements. In cheer we are very tight and wait until the last moment to change positions. I would say you might want to make sure you can snap your moves cleanly.

Also, cheer jumps are not all the same as dance leaps and jumps, so check into those and see if you can do them.

I imagine you are very flexible but keep on stretching anyway. You need to retain that flexibility for cheer.

Go here and start learning what else there is to do in cheer:

    Good luck! :^D
