Q&A: Why do girls want cheerleading to be called a sport?

Question by truthfinder: Why do girls want cheerleading to be called a sport?
If cheerleading is a sport then why do you only play your “sport” when there is another sport being played? I understand you have maybe 1 or 2 actual events a year but you have got to admit that is nothing but a dance compitetion.
Just because you have to be athletic to do something does not make that something a sport. Another thing evertime I ask a girl if she played sports in highschool she says: NO I CHEERED. unless they played sports of course then i get: yeah softball, basketball, vollyball, ect…. try it yourself and see what happens.
Yes i’ve seen what the compitetions are about. That is my very point. It is a choreographed dance. It is very impressive and you have to be very agile to do it but you are not reacting to what another team or person is doing. Sorry not a sport.
The scoring system is done by a panel of judges. JUST LIKE A DANCE COMPITETION. Dance teams pratice alot too so your argument is what is stupid. And you should be the one that should keep your mouth shut. People on good chess teams practice alot too and that does not make chess a sport. Cheerleading can be very hard to do but that’s not the point. the point is that it is not a sport i don’t care how many and you can’t make a reasonable argument that is , and will never be able too.
I got ahead of myself there. I don’t care how many comps you do. it is not a sport. The only people that care about cheerleading is cheerleaders themselves and maybe the parents of one. Everyone else wants you to shut up so they can watch the game in peace!!!!

or

at allstar cheer we have practice 3 times a week for 3 hours each and high school 6 days a week 2 hours people break and sprain things in cheerleading more than anyother sport and also their have been some deaths in cheerleading not that any of that is good but im guessing you diddnt know that.

PS on top of practice you have to run a 1/2 mile to 1 mile (depending on the day) and condtion at the end just like anyother sport and if you want me to keep going i can but i would rather not

btw then i guess you dont think dance gynastics or anything else like that is a sport do you?

What do you think? Answer below!

Cheering takes alot of athletic ability and agility. Competition doesn’t make something a sport, the act of sweating while you are doing something physical with your body can be a sport too. They practice LONG hours and get hurt and have very sore muscles. It’s not just a social thing.

I totally agree with you, cheer leading isn’t a sport! I think some girls just have nothing else important in their lives to care about, and they have obsess at least over one thing. I don’t know… ;] I do know that I am proud to have never been a cheerleader though! haha :]

I am cheerleader personally i think its a sport, we do have to run and push ups and other stuff and we HAVE to have mucsles or we would die out there. We have to be in shape like regular athletes

There is no such thing as a sport whose heart and soul is supporting another sport. Think of why it’s called “cheerleading” and not “lifting bodies and throwing them while shouting and doing cartwheels”. Also, a sport should have an objective scoring system, otherwise it’s just an activity. It doesn’t matter how fit you claim you have to be–I’ve seen cheerleaders practice and I don’t see them exactly running marathons to stay in shape; usually they’ll just take a leisurely walk around a track. Maybe it’s different in other places, but nonetheless, this aspect doesn’t even matter. It’s just by its nature NOT a sport.

I am a cheerleader myslef and I think that it is a sport. It’s harder then most sports out there. It’s even harder then football. It’s not a dance thing. It takes long hard hours to become a cheerleader. It’s not all east like you most guys think that it is. Some think it’s not a sport but it is. Trust me. I would like to see you all get out there and make the cheerleading team. It’s a sport and a team like anyother.

Um… cheerleading and dance are not the same, first off… I cheered for a highly competitive team for 3 years and we ranked 2nd in the nation in 2005, first in the state, along with many other 1st place winnings… A cheerleading routine consists of about 10 seconds of dancing( if you’re a good team anyways, and thats out of 2 and a half minutes ) You have to tumble and stunt which take time and practice!! Yea, maybe people who cheer for teams who arent good and practice once a week or even a month will say it isn’t a sport, but when you cheer for a team and practice 6/7 days a week and some of those weekend practices are 8 hours long… I’d say it is a sport… we’re just as competitive as you guys! And also… just so you know during a cheerleading season, there’s way more than 2 competitions a year.. on a good squad, again… more like 2-4 a month for about 5 months!!! Also, if it’s not a sport, then why does cheerleading rate the second sport for the highest injuries?! Take it from someone who’s been there, it’s a sport buddy…. ya know some people are just plain stupid, before u open your mouths u should know about the sport… there is a scoring system, how do u think u win stuff… duhhhhhhhh
